What's up, dogs?
When I saw this page, I began remembering a lot of the little things that I had fogotten about Hylton rowing over the years. I still remember specific practices that I thought would never end. I remember the sweltering sun beating down on us, and how badly I wanted to take my shirt off and just jump into the water and drink up the whole reservoir, no matter how ugly the water looked. I remember days so cold and rainy all I could do was mentally curse everything in sight to ease my frustration. On those days all I wanted to do was go home and get in a hot shower and never go back out into the rain again.

Those days I remember like yesterday, and I relish each one. What I thought were the worst of days, are now great memories that I wouldn't trade for anything. We had our bad days, and we had our good days, but each day was a great learning experience. Each day was spent in a boat, with nine of my best friends (including coach), working together to strive for greatness. It was a great time. I continued rowing for Mercyhurst College, and my last season was fall '01. I didn't stop rowing because I wanted to. I stopped because I accepted a co-op position with US Steel in Pittsburgh. That is where I am now.

Never quit, Bulldogs.

 Greetings fellow bulldogs,
I'm not sure how I managed to come across this website, but I'm certainly glad that I did. Hylton Crew has come such a long way since my novice year and this site is just one indication of the program's success. After scrolling through the photo gallery for only a few minutes, my mind has already become flooded by memories of the enthusiasm, determination and kinship that marked much of my high school rowing experience.

Now rowing at the collegiate varsity level, I am able to reflect more clearly upon my time with Hylton Crew and realize how important it was to my growing up. The boat provided me with some of the most salient feelings of my high school career, but nothing is more essential than the innate sense of belonging within an eight. As I now dedicate the majority of my life to practicing with what was once "the enemy," I cannot help but reminisce of my days at the Oxford Boathouse. Seat racing, lifting and erging next to guys from Prep, Albans, Andrews, Canisius, Greenlake, and crews that I could once only imagine, I realize how proud I still am to don my Hylton unisuit. There is something peculiar about our sport familiar to only those who have experienced it. I think Nietzsche phrased it best when he said, "When one rows, it is not the rowing which moves the ship. Rowing is only a magical ceremony by means of which, one compels a demon to move the ship."

Good luck this season and don't forget that Hylton's colors are blue and gold! The results shouldn't be any less clear.

Godspeed,
Bryan Cory

P.S. I've attached a picture from this year's spring training trip to Florida (I'm in bow).

I also have a ton of pictures from Hylton at home somewhere. I'll try and get them scanned for you once I find them. Great job on the website!

The page looks great!!! I spent 4 years in the program and I am glad to see it is up now for everyone to see. Hylton crew is the best and everyone should know it. I don't have a crew team at my college and I miss it so much but I am glad I can now go back and see pictures from High School. Good job, please keep it up!!! Good luck Hylton on this season!
