About the Nissan Fundraising program:

Our participation in Nissan Pavilion's Fundraising program is one of Hylton Crew's more lucrative moneymakers. We generally make about $4500 in a season, working about 10 concerts! We work for the Nissan concessionaire, Aramark, and earn 6% of the gross sales at our registers.

Working at Nissan can be a lot of fun – and there's nothing difficult about the jobs we do there. We typically run cash registers in one of the snack bars, and occasionally will be given the opportunity to man one of the large beverage kiosks or one of the small portable beer stands. Depending on where we are stationed, we'll serve both drinks and food such as bottled or draft beer, margaritas, wine, bottled or fountain sodas, bottled water, pizzas, pretzels, popcorn, chicken fingers, fries, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, subs, chips, and candy.

Participation requirements:

Nissan workers must be at least 18 years old and must attend a mandatory TIPS training class every 3 years.

Reporting Times:

Report times vary by concert. The coordinator will always list the report time in the pre-concert emails. Typical report times for an evening concert are 4:00-4:30. We can often have part of our contingent arrive a little later as long as a few of us are there to get things started. For the big, all day concerts, we may work in 2 shifts. Report times can be as early as 9:00 a.m.

What to wear:

The required "uniform" for Nissan concerts is

  • Khaki pants or shorts (you will be using bleach water to clean stuff, so wear some old clothes!)
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with socks (NO sandals allowed!). You will be standing all night.
  • Aramark shirt and hat, provided by the Nissan coordinator.
  • Group ID pin and TIPS trained pins are worn on the shirts, too.
  • Each worker must wear their TIPS card on a lanyard.

Volunteers can get their shirts and hats ahead of time, or can get them from the coordinator after they arrive at Nissan.

It is often very warm in the snack bar. If we're in one of the beverage kiosks, or standing out in the open at a beer portable, it can be quite cool during some of the early or late season events, so you may want to wear a shirt under your uniform.

Directions, Parking, and Entry:

Depending on where you're coming from, take the best route to 234 Bypass toward Manassas. After you pass the interchange for Rte 28, you will turn left on Wellington Road. There's a double left turn lane there and signs for Nissan. Once on Wellington, go about 3 miles and Nissan will be on your left. We try to carpool as much as possible – it's more fun and makes it easier when we all arrive together.

Volunteer workers need to enter at the first parking lot entrance. There's a large double left turn lane there. When you get to the parking attendants, let them know you're there as a volunteer worker and they'll wave you on in. If you're arriving on time before the pavilion opens to the public, the lot will usually be mostly empty (unless it's Jimmy Buffett!) and you'll head for parking area "A" which is in the back right corner of the lot. If you're coming late, or are doing a 2nd shift for a big concert, then just follow whatever directions the parking attendants give you.

Walk from wherever you've parked toward the back corner of the lot; look for other volunteers (in maroon shirts) and concession workers (in teal shirts). You will come to a gate where there will most likely be a security guard. Let this person know that you're a volunteer – he may or may not take the time to confirm your name from the list we provide to Aramark.

After you get past the guard, proceed along the back of assorted buildings (~100 feet) until you see what looks like the back entrance to a kitchen with a big gray fence and gate. Just inside the door of the kitchen will be a sign-in desk. You'll need to make sure you get signed in on the Hylton Crew sheet – NOT the Hylton Band sheet! The folks manning the sign-in desk can tell you where you'll be working. Follow their directions and we'll see you there!

A typical night in the snack bar:

We usually have 4-7 workers when we're in the snack bar. Upon arrival, we all get gussied up in the fashionable Aramark shirts and hats. We wipe down all the counters and equipment surrounding our registers with bleach water. We scoop popcorn into bags and put the bags in the warmer. We put chips in the nacho warmer. We make sure everyone knows how to work the cash register and the credit card machine. We stay out of the way of the Aramark employees who are inventorying cups, salting pretzels and getting food ready to sell. The coordinator will pick up our cash and fill our registers. Now we're ready for the evening.

Just before the gates open, we log in our cash registers and get ready to serve our customers. During the event most of us will work the registers -- easy job since each item is marked on the pad. Just punch in "Pepsi" or "draft beer" or whatever and you're done! In the snack bar, we try to have one or two "runners" whose main job is to travel up and down the snack bar grabbing food or pouring beers for the register workers. Often the register workers are also traveling up and down the snack bar grabbing food, too!

Near the end of the concert Aramark will cut off sales of alcohol and that's when we start cleaning up -- wiping down counters, cleaning out nacho and popcorn warmers, counting our money, and just general straightening. We are usually out of there before the concert ends, so we beat the traffic!

A typical night in the beverage kiosk:

We usually have 11-14 workers when we're in beverage kiosk. Upon arrival, we all get gussied up in the fashionable Aramark shirts and hats. We wipe down all the counters in the booth, and do an inventory of all the cups, food and drinks. We salt big pretzels and put them in the warmer. We scoop popcorn into bags and put the bags in the warmer. We move soda and water bottles from the fridges to the front coolers and ice them down. We mix up margarita mix and get the machine going. We make sure everyone knows how to work the cash register. Now we're ready for the evening.

Just before the gates open, we log in our cash registers and get ready to serve our customers. During the event some of us will work the registers -- easy job since each item is marked on the pad. Just punch in "Pepsi" or "draft beer" or whatever and you're done! Others will fill orders -- pulling beers, sometimes pouring the bottled beers into cups, filling wine cups from the wine box, filling margarita cups from the machine, grabbing pretzels and popcorn from the warmers. Others will help with stuff like re-stocking the front coolers with drinks and ice, making the margarita mix, taking out trash (especially needed when we have to pour the water and soda into cups!), wiping down counters and go-fering.

Near the end of the concert Aramark will cut off sales of alcohol and that's when we start cleaning up -- putting sodas and water back in the fridges, wiping down counters, recounting all the cups and food and drinks so we can see how much we sold, and just general straightening. Because we have to inventory everything, we may not get out before the concert ends.
